Identify an example of three of the Cellular functions listed below. Describe specific structures that are used to carry out the process. Identify if each example happens eukaryotic, prokaryotic or both cell types.

1. Regulates transportation of materials

2. Performs chemical reactions

3. Transforms energy

4. Adapts and evolves

5. Synthesizes and secretes proteins

Solutions

Expert Solution

ANSWERS:

1. Regulates transportation of materials- Golgi apparatus

The important function of golgi apparatus is to process, package, and transport the materials for secretion. It's found in only eukaryotic cells.

2. Performs chemical reactions- Cytoplasm.

Most of the chemical reactions in a cell are performed in the cytoplasm, which is found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

3. Transforms energy- Chloroplast

Chloroplast, found in the plant cells, is the organelle which transforms the light energy from sun into chemical energy, during the process of photosynthesis. It is absent in the prokaryotic cells.

4. Synthesizes and secretes proteins- Rough endoplasmic reticulum( RER)

Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis. And since RER bear ribosomes on their surface, they are actively involved in the protein synthesis and secretion. They are found only in eukaryotic cells.

The question asks to answer any three of them. However, I've provided answers to four of them, with explanations. Thanks.
