In general, there is no one fit for all reward program that can be followed by all the employers and find it effective. But, the employers can use Maslow's hierarchy of needs to identify different needs of the employees and correlate it with the different rewards that can best cater those needs. It starts developing motivation in these employees so that they can work with more zeal, dedication and deliver their best results. For example, an employer can set monetary rewards, incentives and other benefits to those employees who are at the lowest level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. It is basically physiological needs and then safety needs. So, the employees at the lowest level of hierarchy should be awarded with the incentives that can help fulfill these needs. Similarly on a higher level, esteemed needs go to the employees who are at the higher level and they need recognition and respect. For these people, non-monetary rewards, public recognition should be given to them so that they can be motivated. It will help employers make effective rewards and incentives program.

Self-reward is important to be given
when job is well executed, because if it gets
successful, then each employee can deliver the best performance and
organization as a whole achieve its goals. As a part of self
reward, it is the employee who links its needs to the rewards and
best types of rewards, that can motivate him or her. So, when
employees do it on their own, then it has a higher scope of being
success. It becomes more flexible for the workers and
workers chose the type of reward to be received as they best know
the type of rewards suitable for them.
