Climate change impacts in central Asia and their implications for development. ( 200-300 words ) thanks.
Central Asia is a geographical entity having the land frontiers of Middle East to the west , East Asia to the east,Sub - Arctic /Siberian region to the north and Himalayan mountain range to the South.
Almost all parts of erstwhile soviet union excluding present day Russia constitute central Asia while Afghanistan and some parts of China also belong to this region.
Central Asia has 2 climatic zones: Semi arid and desert climatic zones. Sub - Arctic region has cold winters and mild summers with very negligible precipitation whereas continental regions have warm to hot summers and cold winters with high precipitation throughout the year causing high temperature variation from season to season and from day to night. Flora and fauna here is also specific to the region and cannot be found anywhere in the world owing to the adaptability to the harsh climatic conditions over the evolutionary course. Rainfall is meagre and melting of glaciers forming streams and rivers is the major source of water, the lifeline of civilization.
Climate changes such as global warming and disruption in seasonal wind patterns poses great implications to development as melting glaciers causes rivers to flow out during summer and dry out during winter causing a dilemma in societies whether to prioritize agriculture or Industry ( Hydel power generation). People also migrate away from rural areas to urban areas to deal with these weather extremities causing over exploitation of resources due to population burst. And a failed agricultural society soon topples in the balance and is a threat to its very existence. Eventually people may slowly migrate away from Central Asia to a more survival friendly region ,where there is no people is there is no development and even if migration is somehow barred, heat wave does the work by affecting the crop yields and threatening the food security of the region and the health of the individuals directly, reducing the population to the ground . This can be projected (extrapolated) from the happenings in the region off late.
Thus the task ahead is to curb the deterioration of nature, to preserve it for the generations to come as development of any sort is meaningless if there is no future to it.
