was the spanish american war necessary and justifiable?

was the spanish american war necessary and justifiable?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • I think it was justified,for the following reason;
  • The United States helped to free Cuba
  • The United States gained the territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines
  • Acquisition of the Philippines allowed for the United States to begin trade in Asia
  • Cubans had been figting for independence for years, and with the intervention of the United States, Cubans gained their independence and the United States gained an important ally in trade and commerce.
  • Guam served as a strategic naval and military base for the United States and Puerto Rico provided the United States with more overseas territory.
  • The Philippines served as very strategic overseas territory for the United States, allowing for the US to begin trade and relations with Asia.
  • US went to war because they could, and the public felt the sinking of the Maine justified going to war. They didn’t know, and couldn’t know it wasn’t sabotage. America didn’t want Cuba as a colony but did want to replace Spanish political and economic influence with our own. US wrapped themselves in the banner of freeing the Cuban people to do so. Future trade was certainly a motive,so it clearly seemed justified.
