Reflection Paper:
In my opinion Performance Measurement refers to the process of critically analysing and monitoring the performance output of an individual, group or organization in order to identify the degree to which the results are meeting the expectations. According to my perspective performance measurement is important part of improvement process as it helps to track the progress of an individual or group through examining how short are the outputs falling and why are they are deviating from the goals thus enabling the assessors to identify the cause and reasoning behind the shortcomings. For example measuring the performance at the end of a team project will not only enable us to know what the results were
Performance measurement can also help to perform a self assessment of one's growth or improvement through measuring them against certain targets or standards that match the true potential or capability of the individual. Through keeping a strong eye on how the performance is occurring over a period of time the performance measurement will eventually help to measure it against some predetermined goals or motives which were intended to be achieved.
I rely believe that performance measurement should be introduced and incorporated as a process in the business organization rather than an activity to ensure that it is instilled in each and every area which will also help to keep the individuals or tems directed towards a particular objective. Moreover the performance measurement can be both quantitative as well as qualitative in nature as in both cases it should intend to reflect on positive and negative deviations so as to adress them properly which will lead towards improving the results. Therefore I see performance measurement as a facilitator of improvements.
Moreover the performance measurement (specifically qualitative) should not be influenced or affected by any cognitive error that's why the assessors should be chosen very wisely. For instance if the co-workers are assessing the performance of their colleague it might be Influenced by factors such as bias, stereotype, horn effect, halo effect, jealousy etc. Thus a coworker out of recent argument might give a bad score to the individual while he performed well.
Further performance measurement process can be well implemented and reflected with the help of KPI's i.e key performance Indicators , which are specific to each individual or team.
Performance measurement can be obtained through two main measures :
Where the current or actual level of performance is compared with the desired level of performance.
Or the current actual performance with that the historic level of performance.
