1)     Look at the Ethernet frame. Based on the size of the field that holds the MAC address, how long is a MAC address?

2)    What is the function of the last field in an Ethernet frame?

3)     List two LAN types other than Ethernet, (Ethernet being by far the most popular LAN type).

4)     Provide an example of an Ethernet MAC address.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) Media Access Control Address:

  • MAC addresses are unique 48-bits hardware number of a computer, which is embedded into a network card also known as Network Interface Card during the time of manufacturing.
  • It is also known as Physical address a network device.

Format of MAC address:

  • It is a 12 digit hexa decimal number or 6 byte binary number.
  • It is represented by colon hexa decimal notation.

2) The function of the last filed in an Ethernet frame:

The last field is CRC which is used to detect errors.

CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Check.

  • It is a four byte field.
  • This field contains 32-bits hash code of data which is generated over destination address,Source address,Length and Data Field.
  • If the checksum computed by destination is not same as sent checksum value, data received is corrupted.

The above answer regards to the Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) format.

3) Types of LAN:

A lan is a private network that typically is made up of well-connected,reliable,and fast network connection.

Its types:

  • WAN
  • MAN
  • CAN

CAN:

  1. It stands for Campus Environment or a campus area network.
  2. In this case , the interconnections between the buildings may be provided by internal resources.

MAN:

  1. It stands for metropolitan area network.
  2. In this case, the odds are very high that you will not own the entire infrastructure.

WAN:

  1. It stands for Wide area network.
  2. These technologies allow to create a multi-location LAN, or WAN that could span the globe.

4) Example of the Ethernet mac address:

Mac address for an Ethernet NIC: 00:0a:95:9d:68:16

Web Development Example Question: (a) Difference between Ethernet and IP When we look at the diagrams of the Ethernet and IP packets we see a number of similarities. Both contain source and destination addresses, a data payload, and a field to indicate what higher layer protocol the data payload is carrying. Why do we use IP for the worldwide Internet and only use Ethernet in limited networks?
