How can a person be a leader and a servant at the same time? In what ways is servant leadership like a trait? How does a person become altruistic? Is this an inborn trait or a learned behavior? How are servant leaders different from other types of leaders?
A person can be a leader and a servant at the same time by giving priority to the goals of the entire team rather than his individual desire for power and status. The leader servant sacrifices his own needs for the benefit of the team. For example, ideally politicians in a democracy are supposed to serve the citizens and work towrards creating a better nation through hard work and self sacrifice. It's driven by the human trait of empathazing with others and realisation of a duty for the people (a company or a nation) beyond self interest. Every individual is born with the ability to empathise with others, but the trait is developed through interaction with the society and the need for creating better conditions for others. Servant leaders differ from other types of leaders in the sense that they are not driven by the desire for power and money, but the motivation to work for the welfare of others and serve the society selflessly.
