ESSAY: In your own words, what is operations management? How does it add value to the success of the business entity? What is the role of the operations manager?
Operations management is defined as the administration of business practices and processes with the motive of achieving the highest level of efficiency across all programs and departments. It is concerned with converting raw materials into goods and services in the most efficient manner to maximize the profits of the business. It also involves utilization of manpower, materials, and technology to develop and deliver goods to clients based on their requirements.
How does it add value?
Initially, there was a belief that operations management is only relevant to manufacturing companies since they involve a good number of processes and operations. Operations management deals with various issues like determining the size of manufacturing unit, implementing the structure of IT department and evaluating project management methods. Other operations include inventory management, acquisition of raw materials, quality control and maintenance policies. It directly affects the profitability of the business by creating processes for efficient utilization of raw materials without any wastage. I short one can say that it includes planning, organizing, controlling and coordinating the raw materials which are needed to produce goods and services for the company.
Role of Operations Manager
The operations manager holds a senior level post in a company who monitors the conversion of raw materials into goods and services. He or she is responsible for management of resources and understanding the need of the hour like hiring more people, employees development programs and evaluating the assignments submitted the employees during training. He or she also undertake financial management decisions like budgeting, controlling and keeping a track of the financial health of the company. The operations manager is responsible for setting goals and objectives for other departments across the hall. Operations manager are responsible for establishing policies which act a guideline for other employees to main a code of conduct in business practices and operations.
