Explore the concept of power distance and its impact on the workplace and social issues as a whole. Be specific with examples.
Power distance is a concept developed from the difference in distribution of power among employees. In certain cultures higher power distance, I.e. greater inequality in power distribution is accepted, while in some cultures it isnt. The greater the power distance, greater is the disparity between managers and sub-ordinate in the organization. Often, it becomes an obstacle to communication and coordination in the organization. For example, an employee feels inhibited to share his opinions and views freely with his manager. Also, the manager expects to be respected and demands it, rather than commanding and earning respect.
However, in companies where power distance is low, employees freely discuss with their managers. The environment at workplace is relaxed and comfortable. There is flow of communication and transparency exists. The manager plays a role of a guide , rather than being an instructor .
