External structure of earthworm on ventral view.
1) Body is cylindrical and divided into 100-120 true segments.
2) Colour reddish brown
3)Ventral surface presents :
Male Gential pores at 18th segment
Female genital pores at 14th segment.
-anterior end possess mouth and prostomium
- 1st body segment called prostomium
-at segment 14-16, covered by dark glandular tissue called clitellum which secretes mucus and albumin for coccon formation
- anus, at posterior end
-S shaped setae at all segments except 1,2 and clitellum responsible for locomotion.
Transverse section through body :
-Body wall: made up of
Cuticle
Epidermis
Mucosal layer
Coelomic layer
-Body cavity: called Schizocoel
