Earthworm: This experiment worked with the earthworm because the earthworm’s neurons are unmyelinated. Explain the usefulness of myelin in the human body.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Myelin has some important uses in human body. They are listed below.

  1. Myelin forms the myelin sheath around axons of nerves and help in rapid conduction of nerve impulses.
  2. Myelin prevents electric current from leaving nerve cell by increasing electrical resistance and decreasing capacitance across the axolemma.
  3. Myelin sheath provides electrical insulation to the nerves and protects them from outside stimulation.
  4. Myelin sheath provides the track for nerve fibres during nerve regeneration.
  5. Myelin helps in having larger body parts by helping in rapid conduction of impulses.
  6. Myelinated fibres prevent sodium leakage into the extracellular fluid and thereby helps in maintaining electrochemical gradient.

Explain: (a) Myelinated axon: Some neurons, like most of the neurons in human body, have myelinated axons; the axons are wrapped around with segmented myelin sheaths. When compared with unmyelinated axons of the same axon diameter, the neural signal transmission speed along myelinated axons is much faster than that along unmyelinated axons.
