Rahul Dixit is working with Dhanraj Enterprises as Manager since the past 2 years. Rahul reports to Bala Raghavan. Rahul has been having constant conflicts with his boss Bala. Rahul has also escalated this to HR. Rahul’s performance appraisal is due and he has requested the HR Manager to also be a part of the performance feedback discussions as he is unsure if Bala will evaluate his performance in a fair manner. How do you think Bala should handle the appraisal discussions?
It is a matter of ethical decision and also a moral responsibility that one should understand the fact of keeping the personal conflicts and odds apart from the professionalism. As Rahul is having constant conflicts with his immediate supervisor Bala, at the time of appraisals Bala should understand that conflicts are a part of the organisation and doesn't mean to show the negative sides of the performance of an individual. Every individual has a way of performing the job and different perspective of conducting an operatio. Thus, difference in opinions can cause conflicts and hinderance in the process. Although these conflicts should become a mark for evaluating and assessing the performance of an employee. Being an ethical manager in the organisation, Bala should take care of the authority appointed to him and be fair and treat everyone equally including Rahul and other subordinates in the merits of the actual performance done by them and not on the basis of personal or biased judgements one has due to conflicts.
