How does black body radiation related to quantum mechanics in the earliest stage?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Black body was one of the phenomenon that was not be explained by classical mechanics.A theory developed by Rayleigh and Jeans predicted that the intensity should go to infinity at short wavelength. Since the intensity actually dropped to zero at short wavelength, the Rayleigh- Jeans results to the ultraviolet catastrophe.

Quantum mechanics explains black body radiation.

Max Planck explained it by proposing that the energy of electromagnetic waves is quantized rather than continuous. He said, energy of radiation absorbed or radiated in the integral multiple of smallest unit of energy i,e, hv

where, h is Planck constant and is frequency.

We can understand ultraviolet catastrophe using quantum mechanics ( quantization of energy). At low temperature, radiation with only relatively low frequencies is emitted, corresponding to low energy quanta. As the temperature of an object increases, there is an increased probability of emitting radiation with higher frequencies. Hence, the graph between the energy and emitted wavelength shifts to lower wavelength at higher temperature.

This not only solved black body radiation but become the basis of quantum mechanics.

Why is it that thermal radiation of a black body usually described by a spectral distribution function rather than an intensity vs frequency curve? I have a vague explanation for this: Any measured intensity of radiation will contain a spectrum of frequencies which are impossible to separate (even with a very good spectrometer, one can only measure the intensity of an interval). So it is practically impossible to assign a particular intensity to a particular frequency. Is my reasoning correct?
