1. How is the temperature dependence of the solubility of a solid in a liquid exploited to purify solids thorugh recrystalization?
2. How does temperature dependence of the solubility of a gas in a liquid affect the amount of oxygen available for fish and other aquatic animals?
3. How does the pressure dependence of the solubility of a gas in a liquid account for the bubbling that occours upon opening a can of soda?
Solution.
1) The recrystallization method is based on the property that the solubility increases for most of the compounds as the temperature of a solvent increase. In the recrystallization technique, an impure solid compound is dissolved in a solvent and then allowed to crystallize slowly in the cooled solution. While the compound from the solution is being formed, the molecules of other compounds are remaining dissolved in a solution and are excluded from the crystal lattice growth to give a pure solid.
2) When the temperature rises, the solubility of gas in a liquid reduces. More gas can be dissolved at the lower temperature. The level of dissolved oxygen is very important to the aquatic life and affect the water quality.
3) The gas solubility is directly proportional to its pressure
above the surface of the solution . Soda is bottled under pressure
to increase the carbon dioxide concentration in the solution. If we
open the bottle, the pressure above the solution drops off. As a
result, the abundant carbon dioxide bubbles.
