What property of liquid crystals allows them to be exploited in the development of technological devices?
Name and describe two techniques that can be used for the experimental characterization of a liquid crystal. Briefly indicate what type of information obtained from the technique correlates with the properties of liquid crystal

Solutions

Expert Solution

Position, orientation, bond orientation and optical properties allow the liquud crystals to exploit in the development of technological devices.

Spectral technique:-spectral technique requires FTIR and NMR techniques.with FTIR we get better resolution and range.

NMR helps in performing the experiment on the atom instead of electron.

NMR helps in exploring the nature of H Present in a liquid crystal.

POM:-POM stands for polarised optical microscopy.if polarised light incident on any material has its polarization direction either parallel or perpendicular it will appear black under crossed plarizer.since liquid crystal are anistropic ,they cause light polarized along the direction to propagate at a differeny velocitythan that of plarized perpendicular to the director, the liq. Crystal might appear bright under crossef polarizer.

It will help in detection of type of a liquid crystal.
