Though getting married to Mr.Collins meant getting married to an
intolerable person and
being trapped in a loveless marriage, yet Miss Lucas found
materialistic contentment
through this marriage . How far do you think Miss Lucas made an
appropriate decision in
choosing her life partner, given the fact that she did not have
many choices?
If choosing a life partner serves a goal then we must realise that every individual has their own sets of goals and their own subjective interests. Thus, a decision which seems wrong to us may be the best decision for someone else.
First of all in case of Miss Lucas, it must be taken into consideration that she didn't have much of a choice and thus, let us just compare the pros and cons of marrying Mr. Collins. On one hand, from an outsiders point of view, the cons might be lack of affection and intolerable personality of Mr. Collins while the pros can be the materialistic and financial status.
Now, it all depends on what is more important to Miss Lucas. If it is affectionate and tolerable husband then her decision won't seem appropriate but if it is materialistic contentment then the decision is absolutely appropriate. It all depends on her subjective interests and priorities. Being said that as she didn't had much choice, her decision seems to be appropriate because she can atleast find contentment through the material possessions.
