Primary immune response occurs when the body encounters the specific pathogen for the first time. The IgM is the most common antibody in the primary immune response. Secondary immune response occurs when the body encounters the same specific pathogen for the second time. Here, the IgG is the most common antibody. This processes is represented in the following diagram,
When pathogens enter the body, first they are encountered by neutrophils and elicit an inflammatory response. Monocytes and macrophages come to the rescue if neutrophils fail to kill the pathogen. Antigen presenting cells like dendritic cells present the antigens to lymphocytes through MHC complexes in the lymph nodes. Natural killer cells try to destroy the antigen by secreting cytokines and activating mast cells.
