The main purpose of a health care record is to provide a means of communication to facilitate the safe care and treatment of a patient/client.

The health care record may also be used for communication with external health care providers, statutory and regulatory bodies, in addition to facilitating patient safety improvements, investigation of complaints, planning audit activities, research (subject to ethics committee approval, as required); education; financial reimbursement and public health.

The record may become an important piece of evidence in protecting the legal interests of the patient/client, health care personnel, other presonnel.

In health care records management, those "little areas" are every where. Problems start when an information management plan fails to sync with an organizations other work flows.

Records management in heath care is the physical or digital management of medical records in clinics, hospitals, and practices of every size.

Not having easy access to potentially life-saving or life-changing health information is a significant risk that unmanaged medical records patient.

Many medical facilities do not see medical records management as a critical or necessary function. As a result, they do not provide training or structure to create an efficient and complaint policy.
