You are a physician who has just become a partner in a nine-person group practice located in a city of 350,000 people with two teaching hospitals (240 beds and 185 beds), two other smaller community hospitals, and twenty group practices of ten physicians each or larger. The area’s largest employer has just gotten a contract that will require it to hire 260 new employees. Another company has just announced that it is relocating to the city and expects to need 115 new employees. Overall, the local economy is thriving with great prospects for the future. You have some awareness that your group faces competition in attracting patients, but you are not sure what to do about it.
Question:
-Describe what you will do to educate yourself about the idea of “strategic thinking,” the principles of strategic planning and management, and the actions the group should take to prepare itself for the future?
-How will you involve the group’s partners in the strategic initiatives you have in mind?
-On the basis of what you have learned about managing healthcare as a business strategy, what are some of the first steps you would propose that the group take?
planning is the process of understanding and analysis of a system and making strategies to attain its goals.
The strategic planning involves the highest planning level to develop objectives and to determine the services needed to attain the goals .
The planning must be
-Relavant.
--Realistic.
-Observable.
-Measurable.
-Achievable.
The main principles are:-
1. To provide high quality patient care
2. To provide effective community orientation.
3.To provide economic facilities to meet needs.
1.Provide high quality patient care.
In order to attain the goal
-Appoint adequate employees ( physicians, nurses and other professional staff.) and provide necessary equipment and services to them to provide good services.
- Establish a well defined structure and authority to provide maximum client care.
Each members should be given instructions regarding their roles and responsibilities in providing health care.
-Every members must work as a team.
All must have good interactions and communications among themselves.
- Provide educational programmes to employees to update their knowledge in providing care by using latest technologies.
- Provide a protocol for maintaining standards of client care.
2. Provide effective community orientation.
--Extend the programmes and services to the community in their own living areas.
- Providing health education regarding health problems , diseases , health care and it's management.
-Select individuals from the community and make as leaders for making a governing board.
so by the influence of them will get more clients.
- Provide information regarding the services provided by the hospital and explain its goals.
3. Provide economic facilities.
- Providing care to clients at low cost.
- Providing necessary equipments like C T, MR I scans, Digital X ray etc to provide care.
-Involve investors also in providing funds.
-Explain the strategy to colleagues and take their opinions.
Arrange meetings and make surveys among employees to get good opinion.
- The group must provide advertisement regarding care provided by the hospital
- Appoint new staff and implementing new technologies.
- Provide necessary facilities to provide good standard health care services.
A good strategic planning will help the hospital to attain their goals and also promotes economic growth .
