Why do you think we’re (in academia) are seeing a resurgence of plagiarism? Is it a case of “the higher the stakes, the more pressure there is to perform” or are we as a society just getting lazy? Is it information overload? From a leadership standpoint, should we be concerned?
In my opinion, resurgence of plagiarism is because we have become too much dependent on the internet and the available sources for the information. Once all the information is readily available to us, we stop questioning it or do not try adding our own thoughts to it, which leads to copying thoughts of others as it is.
This clearly shows our lethargic and careless behaviour has increased and we prefer giving more importance to our other activities and prefer spending as little time as possible on Academic activities. It is not that on should keep toiling, rather one should work smartly. But at the same time, smartness requires deep knowledge about a subject and thereby involving oneself into academic research projects. Simply copying material/ plagiarism will not help us improve over the long run.
Stakes are definitely high and it requires high performance too. But plagiarism is not an answer to address to the issue of high stakes. Work which belongs to oneself and is not copied can prove to be much more fruitful. One can understand and present their own work in a better fashion in front of others rather than poorly presenting plagiarised work.
