Intubation involves several steps, not all are listed below -
but these are the highlights. Pick the best sequence of events in
the correct order:
1- Visualize the chords, suction, intubate, inflate balloon, attach
ventilator, check capnography, portable chest Xray.
2- Suction, Visualize the chords, intubate, inflate balloon, check capnography, attach ventilator, portable chest Xray.
3- Visualize the chords, intubate, inflate balloon, suction, check capnography, portable chest Xray, attach ventilator.
4- None of the above are correct sequences.
The correct answer is 2. Suction, Visualize the cords, Intubate, Inflate balloon, Check capnography, Attach ventilator, Portable chest Xray
Endotracheal intubation involves the procedure of placing or inserting an endotracheal tube into the trachea through the oral cavity. The main purpose of intubation is to maintain a patent airway, administration of oxygen to treat respiratory failure.
The steps involving in the insertion of ET tube involves
Suction-> Visualize the cords-> Intubate-> inflate balloon -> Check capnography-> Attach ventilator -> Portable chest Xray
Position the patient with a pillow under the neck and provide oral suctioning . Hold the larygoscope with the left hand and press over the tongue to visualize the vocal cord. Then insert the ET tube to the trachea through the mouth and inflate the tube and confirm the placement of the tube by any of these methods such as by auscultation, or by noticing the chest expansion, or by checking the capnography. Then connect the tubings to the ventilator. Final confirmation of the placement of ET tube is done by chest Xray.
There occurs several complications following the intubations. Some of the complications of intubation includes misplacing the tube in esophagus, endobroncheal intubation, bleeding, air leak, and barotrauma to lungs.
