Entropy permeates our universe. Five systems are listed below. Pick three systems from the list or pick two systems from the list and come up with a third system of your own. For each system you choose, give an example of something that could happen to increase the entropy of that system and explain why entropy increases.

Systems:

-An automobile

-The human body

-A building

-An ocean

-A solar system

Solutions

Expert Solution

We all know that Entropy is generally the measure of disorder or randomness in a system, greater the disorderness, greater will be the entropy of system and vice versa.

In automobile engine, energy is generated due to Combustion of fuel within the engine, during Combustion, gaseous products like carbon dioxide and water vapour are given out, thereby system approaches towards more random state and entropy increases.

In human body,as we eat food which acts as a fuel for our body, burning of food starts within the body and the process is metabolism, during this process the energy generated creates a state of disorder in the human body as cells start to burn and more energy is liberated, moving towards more disordered state.

In solar system, due to extremely high temperature and due to hot condensed gases present in solar atmosphere, system approaches towards randomness and hence increase in entropy can be justified.

Topic: The Free Energy and Equilibria of Entropy Description: Biological systems differ from chemical systems when it comes to equilibrium. In a chemical system once equilibrium is met, no other reactions occur. In a biological system, a dynamic equilibrium is used when a substrate is turned into a product, another reaction creates the same substrate thus keeping the concentrations stagnant. This allows for cells to continually make new compounds without messing the Delta G for the systems. Instructions: Write a...
