Bismarck rallied the German speaking people within the former Holy Roman Empire where they for centuries looked to local noblemen for leadership. They later followed Bismarck’s call to nationhood based upon their common German language and shared culture. This included their heritage of victories and failures built into their history and myth, dating back to the Roman Empire. The United States on the other hand is comprised of many different cultures, including race, language, various heritage, income levels, etc. But we consider ourselves a nation too, despite our diversity. We celebrate our national heritage in acts of patriotism; flags, parades, military service, etc. What is the comparison between nationalism and patriotism? If the Germans argue the legitimacy of their nation based on the shared heritage of the German people, then what is the common heritage of the American people? What makes us a nation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Patriotism is a concept where people stand as a nation without considering the differences among themselves. People feel proud about what their country does and behave in a way that supports the country without feeling enmity to any other country. Nationalism, on the other hand is a concept that advances same race, same language and same religion. They not only feel proud about their country and how it is made up of but also treat others meanly and behave arrogantly to other people with less tolerance. It was this feeling that caused World Wars in the world which affected everyone.

America is a country that was not only made up of the majority white but also with the Blacks, Native Indians and other people who joined the country’s growth. American constitution provides equal opportunity, equal treatment and mutual respect to all the races, religions and colors. America is proud of what it does and how it progresses and for the people in America, it’s the national flag, heritage and anthem that are more important for the people than their own individual identities such as race, color, culture and ethnicity. It’s this oneness feel that makes America a great nation.
