1. Social determinants of health reflect the social factors and physical conditions of the environment in which people are born, live, learn ,play , work and age . Also known as social and physical determinants of health outcomes. Examples of social determinants include,
* Availability of resources to meet daily needs such as, education and job opportunities, living wages or healthful foods.
* Social norms and attitudes such as discrimination
* Exposure to crime, violence and social disorders such as presence of trash
* Social support and social interactions
* Exposure to mass media and emerging technologies such as the internet or cellphone
* Socio economic conditions such as concentrated poverty
* Quality schools
*Transportation options
* Public safety
* Residential segregation
Poor health outcomes are often made worse by the interaction between individuals and their social and physical environment. Both access to health services and quality of health services can impact the health. Addressing social determinants of health is a primary approach to achieving health equity. Health equity is " when everyone has the opportunity to attain their full health potential and no one is disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of their social position or other socially determined circumstances. " . Social determinants of health such as poverty, unequal access to health care, lack of education, stigma and racism are underlying contributing factors of health inequalities. The Centre For Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) is committed to achieving people lives by reducing health inequalities .
Health organisation institutions and education programs are encouraged to look beyond behavioural factors related to social determinants of health. The Work Health Organization ( WHO) created the commission on social determinants of health to address social determinants of health. The commission uses the following three principles to guide it's work in determinants of health inequalities for local communities and nations and throughout the world.
a) Improve the condition of daily life - the circumference in which people are born, grow, live, work and age
b) Tackle the inequitable distribution of power, money and resources- the structural drivers of those conditions of daily life - globally, nationally and locally.
c) Measures the problem, evaluate action, expand the knowledge base, develop a work force that is trained in the social determinants of health and raise public awareness about the social determinants of health.
The commission created the conceptual framework below the described relationships among individual and structural variables that are based on scientific studies or substantial evidence. The framework provides a point from which researchers can take action, such as creating targetted interventions on social determinants of health.
Each person's health is affected by the person's behaviour, which can turns, is associated with his/her social or economical status and the corresponding environmental conditions .
