• Thomas Jefferson was a prominent Founding Father of the United States. Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. Its original purpose was to announce independence, and references to the text of the Declaration were few in the following years.The second sentence of the declaration, in which Jefferson first used the famous phrase “All men are created equal”, has become a well-known statement on human rights and has been called “the most potent and consequential words in American history”. • He also wrote the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom.Divided into three paragraphs, the statute is rooted in Jefferson's philosophy. It could be passed in Virginia because Dissenting sects there (particularly Baptists, Presbyterians, and Methodists) had petitioned strongly during the preceding decade for religious liberty, including the separation of church and state.

• Jefferson, influenced by various exploration accounts, decided it was of importance to claim to “discover” the Pacific Northwest and the Oregon territory. He believed if they did that, they could establish an American presence so Europeans would not make any claims on the land. He also believed that they could promote commerce and trade by finding a passage from the Northwest to the Pacific.
• President Jefferson called for the criminalization of international slave trade on the first day it was possible. The Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves was signed into law by Jefferson on March 2, 1807 by which no new slaves were permitted to be imported into the United States.
