A relatively new apartment building in St. Kilda has been made with complex architectural balconies.
The balcony railings have been fabricated from an extruded 6000-series (Al-Mg-Si) aluminium alloy.
The balcony railings have been fixed to mild steel posts using stainless steel screws. The construction
team did not use rubber washers in any instance.
Briefly describe what you think may occur in such a situation under atmospheric conditions.
Also, what do you think may occur if galvanised steel screws were used instead of stainless steel?
Finally, what would you have done differently, if you were the chief engineer for the project?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The construction team did not use rubber washers in any instance. So following problem may occur-

Some assemblies are designed to have the parts move with respect to one another when the bolt is actually tight.

The travel of the nut may be restricted by a shouldered design of the bolt or a sleeve can be installed around the bolt in the hole.

In these cases a washer is often used to allow the moving part from wearing the bolt head or nut.

The washer may be made of a material designed to reduce the friction between itself and the moving part.

This can also help to keep a turning part from trying to loosen the nut through friction

Following problem may happen if galvanised steel screws were used instead of stainless steel-

Galvanized steel is prepared by adding a layer of zinc coating to its surface to prevent corrosion, while stainless steel is mixed with ten percent or more of chromium in its molten state.

This means galvanized steel contains regular steel which is covered by zinc, while stainless steel is made up of two separate metals mixed thoroughly together.

Galvanized steel is significantly weaker than stainless steel. Because galvanized steel contains only an outer layer of anti-rust coating that wears away over time.

it does not provide protection against rusting for as long a period as stainless steel, which contains a protective mixture of chromium to help prevent rusting.

Galvanized steel is more affordable than stainless steel.

Recommendations of the chief engineer-

If I would have been the chief engineer I must have used the rubber washer to avoid loosening of fasteners in the railing.

I would have recommended to use stainless steel instead of galvanized steel because stainless steel can protect itself from rusting.

I would have recommended to use glass along with railing for better look and safety.
