The stages of the dam construction are given below:
1. Diverting or stopping the river- Streams or rivers have to be diverted to create a dry area for construction. Sometimes in a case of very heavy flowing river, a dry construction pit is formed on side of the river, leaving the other side open for the water to flow through.
2. Construction of foundation- Type of foundation depends on soil condition and load of dam. The process starts with drilling the ground to find rock srtata and then grouting is done if any lose soil is found.
3. Building the dam- The concrete used for construction of dam should be prepared near the site or from a batching plant. The concrete should be prepared with low heat cement type because of the risk of cracking and shrinking. The Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) Dams are made by pouring the concrete and rolling it afterwards.
4. Filling the reservoir - After dam reaches it's optimum strength, we fill the reservoir.
5. Checking and testing the valves and ensuring everything is ok.
6. Lastly monitoring the behavior of dam.
