The feminization of poverty is a change in the level of poverty biased against women or female headed households.More specifically,it is an increase in the difference in the levels of poverty among women and men. This trend is not only a consequence of lack on income, but also lack of opportunities due to gender bias and fixed gender roles in some societies.Various factors such as family composition, inequality in social protection, labour market inequalities, migration being limited to men, barriers to education of girls etc contributed to rise of this phenomenon.
Women in poverty is going to have profound impact of women and
children.Feminization of poverty leads to reduced access to health
services and resources.Poor health reduces women ability to earn
incomen, and, thus,is a key factor in driving poverty among
women.Women in poverty is not good for families, societies, and
nations(due to high MMR,IMR,CMR,anaemia putting huge burden on
governments).
Inorder to enhance lives of poor women,we need to ensure the
following aspects including icreasing access to health and
educational facilities, increasing awareness about their roles in
the socities,reducing gender stereotypes,increasing opportunites
for women, addressing workplace harrasments, ensuring safe and legal
working conditions etc
