why did texans convene in 1875 to write yet another constitution?
Governor Coke convened a special session of the existing legislature in 1875 to consider the assembling of yet another constitutional convention for Texas. The legislature thus approved, calling for an election in which the voters could approve the convention and themselves can select three delegates from each of the 30 senatorial districts of the state. The new constitutional convention was met in Austin from September 6 upto November 24, 1875. The vast majority of the delegates who were Democrats, but none of them had participated in this convention of 1868-1869. The Constitution of 1876 is perhaps the sixth constitution by which Texas has now been governed since their independence from Mexico was achieved in the year 1836. It was framed initially and totally by the Constitutional Convention of 1875 and was finally adopted on February 15, 1876, by a vote of nearly around 136,606 to 56,652. It remains as the basic organic law of the Texas. The constitution contains some basic provisions that are only uniquely for the Texan, many of which are still the products of the state's unusual history.
