Transfer of training is the process in which something learned during the training is used on the job. Thus learning and transfer of training are closely related to each other and are central to understand how people in the organization develop important competencies. Learning is the ability to acquire knowledge and skills whereas the transfer of training is the extent to which an individual can apply the knowledge and skills acquired in a learning context to performance context. Learning is necessary for transfer. In fact, all the new learning includes transfer based on previous learning experiences.
Transfer of training is an important indicator to know the training effectiveness as it measures the extent to which learning during training is applied on the job. Successful learning does not translate into a successful performance in the work environment but it eases the process of transfer of training. Successful transfer of training leads to successful performance. Therefore both learning and transfer of training are necessary for job training programs.
