This IBC
Design specs :
Advantages:
1. the level of detailing is considerably increased.
2. Gives an uniformity in structure when compared to similar type of structures.
3. Uncertainty about pricing can be resolved.
Disadvantages :
1. Adhering strictly to the conditions may be difficult in field conditions.
Performance specifications:
Advantage:
1. Design work can be included so it is an open specification
2. Innovation can be introduced considerably.
3. Cost effective methods can be adopted increasing profitability
Disadvantages:
1. In search of the desired outcome, the contractor often resorts to inferior methods and materials.
2. Architect's authority is lost once the construction starts.
reference Standards specs
Advantages:
1. Most of the standards are internationally accepted, so chances of poor performance of failure is less
2. Products, materials and equipment are mentioned along side, so quality assurance can be maintained considerably
Disadvantages:
1. Since the issuing authority of these standards is a certified organisation, they need to be followed with attention to detail.
2. Scope for change is low
3. It is non-proprietary
Proprietary Specs
Advantage:
1. Single product performance can be increased with significant efficiency
2. Useful in public projects especially, government, defense, etc.
Disadvantages:
1. project cost is increased.
2. The interference in performance of a single installation may affect others as well.
