What are the postulates of Gregor Mendel, because they are relevant even today?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Gregor Mendel worked on garden pea plant and gave postulated about genetics . He proposed four postulates these are

1) principal of paired factors

He explained that for every character , two factors are responsible like for height two triat are present long and short which are regulated by two factors

2) principal of dominance

According to this , among thscywo factors, one factors express and second factor remains recessive ( not able to Express) . the factor which expresses known as dominant , the factor which is not able to Express known as recessive.

3) Law of segregation and purity of gametes.

According to this law or postulates, every individual has two factors for a character. But in gamete out of two factors only one factor is present. Means each gamete is pure for a factor.

4) law of independent assortment

According to this law , two character regulated by two factors. In individal during formation of gametes these factors assort independent not linked to each other thus lead to generation of all possible type of gametes.

19.14 Gregor Mendel has been called the “father of genetics,” having formulated laws of inheritance even before the function of DNA was discovered. In one famous experiment with peas, Mendel crossed pure breeds of plants that produced either smooth peas or wrinkled peas. The first-generation peas were all smooth. In the second generation (F2), he obtained 5474 smooth peas and 1850 wrinkled peas. Do these data agree with the conclusion of 75% dominant-trait (in this case “smooth”) occurrence in F2?...

Give an example of a character studied by Gregor Mendel, and the two traits within that character. Use Punnet squares to predict the phenotype and genotype ratios of each of the following crosses: A true-breeding homozygous tall pea plant is crossed with a true-breeding homozygous short pea plant. 1- What was one of the most significant conclusions that Gregor Mendel drew from his experiments with pea plants? Group of answer choices There is considerable genetic variation in garden peas. An organism that is homozygous for many recessive traits is at a disadvantage. Traits are inherited in discrete units and are not the results of "blending." Genes are composed of DNA. 2- In a testcross, an unknown individual was crossed with a homozygous recessive individual and 50% of the...

Gregor Mendel established the concept of dominant and recessive genes and characteristics. According to Mendel’s law when crossing two inbred lines, 75% of the offspring should show dominant and 25% recessive characteristics. In his 19th century work studying inheritance of seed form in peas, Mendel observed 7,324 individuals, 5,474 of which had dominant characteristics. a. Does this support or contradict Mendel’s law? You are Gregor Mendel. You have 2 pea plants, one that grew from a green seed, the other that grew from a yellow seed. The parents of both plants were previously highly inbred so that each of your plants is homozygous at all genetic loci. You cross the 2 plants; the seeds that develop from the cross are the F1 generation. You count the seeds and compare the number of green seeds with the number of yellow seeds. Question 1:...
