Martin luther protestant reformation was based on the belief of Martin Luther that several Roman Catholic teachings and practices were based on indulgences such as building exhorbitant buildings. Martin Luther believed in simple living and that anyone can follow Christ without spending a coin for false assurances.

Witch hunts were used to dispel forces which were based on unfounded beliefs and people thronged to such places. Witches who believed in magic and helped influence personal well being. This created a distaste for belief in god, as uneducated people often wanted results quickly. For church penance was to be done over a long duration and for wishes to be fulfilled one resorted to quick and easy methods.

30 years war was between Catholic and the protestant states as draconian measures were imposed prior to the war to follow Roman church which restricted religious freedom. This led to religious tensions and subsquent need for power.

Sunni and Shia conflict is a present day one and is prevalent in Pakistan to Yemen. In this there is a belief that some Muslims don't follow religious purity and thus are not proper Muslims. This has led to wars in Iran and Iraq, violence in Pakistan and the belief that US led invasion has divided the group's further because of sectarianism.
