After you have completed the Unit 1 material and have
considered the many different definitions of Pop Culture posed
within the unit, consider the differences between high culture and
popular culture. Answer the following questions:
When someone is said to be “cultured”, does this refer
to high culture, popular culture, or both?
How would you define, in your own words, “high
culture” and “popular culture”? What characteristics of high
culture are also present in popular culture?
What makes something “high” culture?
Answer) I will answer the second part first, high culture is more associated with more affluent or elite society, their activities, their leisure activities, trends, fashion followed by them while popular culture has more to do with what is in trend with the general crowd be it in terms of fashion, interests, hobbies etc.Chracterstics of high culture which are easy to follow or does not involve a significant cost could also be present in popularculture such as following a trend or having a kitty party with your friends or celebrating your high school graduation with a party, now difference could be of how big the event is but characterstic essence remains the same. Now coming to the first part, when someone is said to be cultured,it generally refers to popular culture that is person is aware about latest trends,his/her dress sense is cultured,s/he knoes about their areas etc.,coming to final part what makes something high culture is uniqueness or rarity of things, such as the ame graduation party may involve high profile celebrities or kitty party may be a big gala event or person could be extremely specific about his/her choices such as brand or their stylist or their choice of car, behaviours which are associated with elite and are rare.
