A serious odour is being emitted from the site of a trickling filter. Discuss the reasons for this odour and how this reflects a problem with the filter efficiency. What corrective measures can be taken to control this nuisance?

Solutions

Expert Solution

A trickling filter is a system that used for wastewater treatment. There would be many abnormal situations when we carry out this process. One of them is odor complaints. Odor is released when the air movement resumes upward or downward. Many times we cannot control the odor emission from the filter. It affect the efficiency of the system. The system should provide the normal environmental conditions when proceeding with the process. The abnormal odor cause environment stress. The offsite odor should be below the detection level.

Inorder to reduce odor emission there are several methods used. Odor dispersion modelling is essential when the filter is built. The calculation can be 40000 cfm scrubber exhaust with a 100 D/T odor level would require 50 foot high stack.

There are other methods. chemical addition, periodic cleaning etc.. help to reduce odor. Chemicals like oxidizers(ozone), bactericides (chlorine) etc.. can be used
