Problem 1 –
a) List the three primary objectives of the NBCC for consideration of earthquake loads.
b) List the two highly populated areas of Canada that have a significant seismic hazard.
c) Why are no importance category factors defined for the SLS when considering earthquakes?
d) What is the P-Δ effect? How does it apply to the gravity force resisting system? e) If a geotechnical report says “The shear wave velocity is 1100 m/s”, what Site Class should you use?
Everything is about NBCC 2015 incase you need it. Please answer all/some of it atleast. Thanks. If you have questions, plesae comment.
Ans a) The three primary objectives of NBCC for consideration of earthquake loads are :
1) To reduce the risk of loss of life through prevention of damage of building
2) To limit the interstorey drift and deformation capability of the structure
3) To reduce the risk of the collapse of the whole structure
.
Ans b) British Columbia and St. Lawrence are the two highly populated area of Canada prone to sesmic hazard
Ans c) No important category factory are defined for SLSwhen considering earthquake because it falls on Uniform acceleration hazard spectrum having probability of exceedance of 2% in 50 years
Ans d) P - effect refers to the sudden changes in ground shear and overturning moment at the base of significantly tall structure . The P - is destabilizing moment equal to gravity force multiplied by horizontal displacement of structure .under sesmic loading
