An affluent suburb in Johannesburg with a population of 35,000 has a solid waste generation rate of 2.3 kg solid waste/day-person. Garden refuse makes up 23% of the total waste generated (by weight). Garden refuse is managed by a composting company who collects the refuse separately. Assume the average density of the solid waste is 140 kg/m3 and is compacted to 340 kg/m3 in the waste collection truck that collects the waste at the home. Once the waste is disposed of in the landfill, it has a density of 220 kg/m3 .

a) Argue why affluent suburbs generate more waste than less wealthy suburbs.

b) Given that the municipal landfill only receives waste from the suburb and has a total available volume of 300 000 m3 remaining, determine how long (in months) will it take to reach the maximum capacity of the landfill.

Getting CT to a 61% Recycle Rate The adopted Solid Waste Plan of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection sets a goal of increasing the percentage of Connecticut mixed municipal refuse that is recycled from its current rate of 25 - 30% to 61% by 2024. It is believed that if that percentage of recycling is achieved, Connecticut residents will no longer have to pay the high costs of disposing of some of the state's incincerator ash and...

A Solid waste management company in Sultanate of Oman has decided to establish a bio energy based system at Barka. As an engineer with good knowledge on energy, you are assigned with a task to study the feasibility of biogas production plant at that location. Suggest an efficient biogas generation plant with suitable biomass, type of biogas digester with a proposed diagram, their advantages and disadvantages. What would be your conclusion about this plant? Justify your answer.

Let’s say that a population has N individuals (2N alleles) in generation t. It suddenly undergoes a population expansion such that the t+1 generation has 100N individuals (i.e.200N alleles). How does this change the effective population size? What does this mean for the amount of drift in this new population?

A hollow cylinder of ID 0.12 m and OD 0.14082 has a heat generation rate of 5 × 106 W/m3. The conductivity of the material is 30 W/mK. The outside surface is insulated and heat is removed by convection over the inside surface by a fluid at 130°C with a convection coefficient of 226.26 W/m2K. Determine the temperature on the outside surface.
