What happens with the degradation of substrates in activated sludge if you add a clarifier. The activated sludge retention time is 0.5 days and the sludge age is 2 days. Also, what if the sludge age is 4 days

Solutions

Expert Solution

Activated sludge process is a type of wastewater treatment.

Atmospheric air or in rare cases pure oxygen is introduced to a mixture of primary treated or screened sewage.

Purpose

  • In a sewage (or industrial wastewater) treatment plant, the activated sludge process can be used for one or several of the following purposes:
  • oxidizing carbonaceous matter: biological matter.
  • oxidizing nitrogeneous matter: mainly ammonium and nitrogen in biological materials.
  • removing phosphate.
  • driving off entrained gases carbon dioxide, ammonia, nitrogen, etc.
  • generating a biological floc that is easy to settle.
  • generating a liquor low in dissolved or suspended material

A rational loading parameter which has found wider acceptance and is preferred is specific substrate utilization rate, q, per day.

q= Q (SO - Se)

An activated sludge aeration blower is delivering air to diffusers in an aeration tank. You want to estimate the isentropic efficiency and the work input (by the motor). At the blower inlet, the volumetric flow rate is measured at 85 m3/min, the pressure is 0.98 atm and the temperature is 20⁰C. If the pressure is increased to 1.61 atm and the blower outlet temperature is 350 K: a) what is the blower isentropic efficiency, and b) what is the work...
