You are to explain why a baseball can be made to curve in flight according to the appropriate concepts presented in Biomechanics. use terms like magnus force, lift, bernouli principle.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The lift force generated by spinning a baseball is the origin of the curve ball. This spinning ball generates a force that is perpendicular to both the flow direction and to the axis of rotation . The path of the spinning object is deflected in a manner that is not present when the object is not spinning and Magnus effect is observable phenomenon associated with a spinning object moving through air or fluid. And Bernoulli theorem states that fluid pressure decreases at points where the speed of the fluid increases. Now when a baseball is lifted to throw then the ball drag some of the air with it and it retards the airflow on the side where drag of ball us turning into air and on the other side the speed of airflow increases. And the sides where speed of airflow is more there pressure increases and speed of rotation is low and where speed of airflow is less there pressure is low so speed of rotation is high so a baseball is made to curve in flight

The flight test data for a given airplane refer to a level‐flight maximum‐velocity run made at an altitude that simultaneously corresponded to a pressure altitude of 30,000ft and density altitude of 28,500ft. Calculate the temperature (in °F) of the air at the altitude at which the airplane was flying for the test.
