Charles Darwin, a naturalist and biologist, had contributed a major leap towards thw knowledge of evolution we ever had. The science based voyage of HMS beagle started in 1831 when Darwin was only 22 years old. He was the naturalist in the group and he had to collect the different samoles from every site they visit. In his historically important and famous sailing in the HMS Beagle, had observed and noted many amazing experiences and observations. His major focus of study was on,
· The meaning of evolution.
· The relationship between evolution and natural selection.
· The relation between natural selection and variation.
The major observations he made from the voyage includes,
1. He visited many new habitats including tropical rainforests where he found many new species that he never knew.
2. He experienced a severe earthquake, which displaced the ocean floor up to 9 meters above sea level. The shells in rocks he found in the mountains, which are commonly seen near the seashores hinted that oceans and continents undergo dramatic changes over time.
3. The rock ledges he visited clearly showed him that once it was a beach and changed over time. Thus, he understood that earth is continuously changing.
4. He dug up fossils of gigantic extinct mammals like a ground sloth. This means that organisms look very different in the past years. It suggested that living things, like earth surface, IS CHANGING OVERTIME.
5. His most important observations were made on the Galapagos Islands. Darwin noticed that the plants and animals on the different islands also differed. The giant tortoises on one island had saddle-shaped shells, while those on another island had dome shaped shells.
Although there are many observations made by him, these are the most important ones.
