Can you think of any incentives that you face the encourage you to behave in ways consistemt with sustainability?? Can you think of any that have the opposite effecfs?? How could the latter be changed??
It is the incentive of increased level of local acceptability, recognition, more business and more monetary rewards that help encourage me to behave that is consistent with the sustainability. It happens in a ways when work is done to create more value for the customers and community, offering wages that is over and above the local law requirements and spread benefits to the community in terms of clean water, hygiene and natural resource preservation. It brings benefits that comes back to organization and its some part of it, comes to those who are volunteers, working to implement sustainability.
Though, in certain occasions, company brings more stress on short term profits, rather than value creation for the society. It makes behave that is inconsistent with the sustainability drive. It is due to the reason that employees come under pressure to perform and try to gain revenue for the company even if it comes via unethical means.
This type of problem or situation can be resolved, when ethical conduct and or sustainability consistent behavior is given due importance in performance appraisal. It will make employees work with more determination that is consistent with the sustainability. It should also be promoted by top management and their intent should be clearly spread from top to bottom in the organization so that employees also show their commitment.
