1. a. Issue one : Technology has a rapidly changing landscape and any chosen field can become obsolete at any time.
In recent years technology has been rapidly evolving into newer domains that can be used in all types of businesses. This has lead to major successes and high earnings for IT careers in a lot of fields (software/hardware/consulting/mobile). There is a significant amount of choice available to new entrants into this field which is highly beneficial to students/young working population. However trends in IT are also highly volatile. Software languages that were all the rage a decade ago are now seeing too many competing alternatives that offer more, or for less, or with additional features that businesses can customise. In this landscape picking the right direction is challenging - , as there is no clear way to forecast if it will be a competitive skill in demand in the market even a few years from now.
This lends a high degree of uncertainty to the IT degree currently being pursued. Making the right decision is crucial to enable continued success in - getting a good job after graduation (year/2 down the line), paying off student loans, gaining financial freedom etc. as the chosen technology or domain could well be on the decline by the time I graduate.
b. Issue two : Too much competition for the most coveted jobs
IT is currently a hot topic for a lot of students with growing interest around the world. This has lead to a lot of IT jobs being created and significant innovations in the last decade. Talented professionals have been able to take IT companies into billion dollar revenues (Apple, Google) and have enjoyed top-of-the-line offices and perks such as the best IT gadgets, swimming pools, gyms, 24 hours no-cost cafeterias etc. However, as more students line up for IT degrees and with higher quality of education available around the world, more students will compete for the same set of jobs once my current class graduates. The chances of landing the job I want are likely to be lower than they were a decade ago.
The top IT firms are few and are seeing a huge number of applicants for jobs, this can result in it being that much tougher to land the job I want with the company I want. This competition could also be a little unfair on some sections due to - language barriers, geographical locations, trends in hiring etc. All of these suggest this IT degree could result in an issue in attaining employment post graduation.
2. Persuasion is the ability to conform a thinking to the presented idea, attitude, action or outcome. It is crucial to manoeuvre a thought process into a prescribed/planned way to instil the thought in the mind of the receiver.
a.Arguing for Issue 1 : The issue of constantly changing paradigms in IT requires that anyone in the field keep up an attitude of continuous learning, as a way to always stay relevant in their domain/field. As IT changes to encapsulate more and more real-world applications (IOT, drones) any IT professional will need to attain and maintain a constant level of current learning to be effective in their jobs. Assuming the attitude of constant learning will allow one to overcome this issue and make a success of this degree.
Arguing for Issue 2 : While there is likely to be boom of IT students and professionals in the coming years, there are also a lot of advancements and new innovations that will create more jobs in the field. These will need more IT workers to be able to deliver technology solutions around the world and will create gainful employment prospects in multiple geographies and domains.
b. A potential audience for this topic are current students - high school upwards - as they start to make decisions about higher studies, employment, choice of domains etc. Once chosen, this line of study should be viewed as a life-long (working life) field of study that will require constant upgrading of skills to learn of advancements in the field, cross-skilling around IT integrations and applications (e.g. google self-driving cars) and acquisition of new skills as they appear on the IT landscape. This audience that is looking to enter the IT field will need to understand the challenges and issues ahead so they can plan their futures accordingly. This can help readers determine if they should pursue an IT career or choose a more stable line that will be more suitable to their future goals.
