Some organizations are starting to envision a sustainable society -- one in which each generation inherits sufficient natural and economic resources and a relatively stable environment. The Woldwatch Institute, an environmental policy organization, estimates that we must reach sustainability by the year 2030 to avoid economic and environmental collapse. In what ways is our current system not sustainable? What might we do to work toward sustainability, and what are the major roadblocks to achieving it? How would your life be different in a sustainable society?
The sustainabie environment can be defined as those that meets the demands of the present generation without compromising much of the future generations. Some of the practices that are not sustainable includes usage of hydrocarbon fuels, unrestricted use of plastics, combustion of fossil fuels that leads to global warming and air pollution, draining untreated waste water from industries into natural water bodies resulting in water pollution etc.
In order to make our environment sustainable, we can ration the use of hydrocarbon fuels, avoid the use of plastics, enacting and implementation of strict environment ptotectpro laws preventing pollution. But, non availability of alternate source of fuels especially in the developing countries is a major roadblock in achieving environmental sustainability.
In a sustainable environment, the standard and quality of life increases. There will be a better quality of water and air. The biodiversity of the ecosystem will also increase.
