Freeway design.
• Demand volume = 60,000 veh/day; Proportion of Peak Hour AADT : 0.08
• Directional distribution: 60/40; Mountainous Terrain and target LOS = C
• FFS 60 mph; 10% trucks; 5% RVs; PHF: 0.95 and fP =1
Determine the directional Design-hour Volume, number of lanes required and
Final density and LOS

Solutions

Expert Solution

for a design of two way traffic, we have to design for  the maximum value of directional traffic

therefore directional volume=60000*0.6 =36000 veh/day

directional design volume for each hour= 36000/24 =1500 veh/hr

we have to provide two lanes with each lane carrying capacity 1500 veh/hr

given free speed= 60 kmph

we know that Q=K.V

where as Q = traffic volume for each lane

V = design speed

K = traffic density for each lane

  • 1500 = K. 60
  • therfore, K = 25 veh/km

from the attachment, we can conclude that the level of significance(LOS) lies in criteria-C

A new suburban freeway is being designed. Estimated AADT is 40,000 veh/day, 60% of the peak flow traffic travels in the peak direction, the PHF is 0.85, and the terrain is rolling. There will be 3 ramps per mile, and traffic is expected to include 18% heavy vehicles (50% SUTs and 50% TTs). Lanes will be 12 feet wide with a lateral clearance of 6 feet.
