Label the scenario shown in each image with the correct types of energy. Each scenario involves at least one type of energy.

Thermal Energy, Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Chemical Energy, Mechanical Work.

1. The movement of gas particles

2. A ball rolling on a flat surface

3. Water held behind a dam

4. The bond between hydrogen atoms

5. Gas pushing a piston upward

There can be multiple answers for some of the scenarios. Thank you!

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans. #1. The movement of gas particles – Kinetic energy, Thermal energy. The energy associated with a particle due to its motion is said to its kinetic energy. The kinetic energy of gas particles (and other microscopic particles) is associated with thermal energy (Random kinetic energy or Internal kinetic energy of gas). Greater is the thermal energy of a gas, greater would be its kinetic energy.

#2. A ball rolling on a flat surface – A ball rolling on a flat surface has kinetic energy due to its motion.

#3. Water held behind a dam – has potential energy due to position of water a certain height from the ground level.

#4. The bond between hydrogen atoms – The atoms bonded through chemical bonds have potential energy stored in the bond.

#5. Gas pushing a piston upward – Thermal energy, Kinetic energy, Mechanical energy. The gas particles with kinetic energy collide with the piston. Kinetic energy of gas molecules is associated with its thermal energy (#1). The displacement of piston in the cylinder is work done by the gas.
