Analyze the population-balancing mechanisms that are operating among the various organisms.

Analyze the population-balancing mechanisms that are operating among the various organisms.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The mechanisms which regulate a population size, can be classified into two broad categories:

1) Density dependent

These factors are dependent on population size

Examples are:-

a) Competition- Competion for food, territory and mate influence the reproductive and survival rate of a population.

b) Predation- More density will lead to high predation pressure. Ex:- Lemmings of high artic tundra were predated by owls and foxes.

c) Diseases- Disease spread faster in high dense population and it can drastically decline it in case of epidemic.Eg. Ceratocystis ulmi fungus epidemic severly affected the elm trees.

Density dependent factors regulate the population size by changing reproduction and survival rate.

2) Density independent

These factors are not dependent on population size

a) Climatic factors

Climatic factors like, food availability, nutrient distribution, pollution and extreme catastrophe directly regulate population size by destroying habitats and increasing mortality rate.

distribution of income among various population groups followed roughly the same patterns in the USA, Sweden, and the former Soviet Union, despite the very different forms of economic organization in each of those countries. Progressives and socialists today claim that if we had a planned economy in which government directed the direction of resources and confiscated money from wealthy people via high taxes, and then re-distributed those monies, that income inequality would be eliminated. Yet, that clearly was not the...

4.9: Population Write a program that will predict the size of a population of organisms. The program should ask the user for the starting number of organisms, their average daily population increase (as a percentage, expressed as a fraction in decimal form: for example 0.052 would mean a 5.2% increase each day), and the number of days they will multiply. A loop should display the size of the population for each day. Prompts, Output Labels and Messages. The three input data...
