“By the early 1970s, the revolution was over in America, and San Francisco—its fall- en capital—staggered on the edge of chaos,” David Talbot writes. “The city was overrun with false prophets and savage messiahs, as well as double agents and police inform- ers. Strange creeds and mysterious leaders developed overnight followings. Inexplica- ble communiques were issued from the underground. The sacraments of blood and guns replaced peace and love.” Briefly describe some notable examples of blood and guns replacing peace and love in the 1970s.
The 1970s in the US were a tumultous time. The minority groups who were discriminated against were still fighting for their equality. This inlcuded marginalised groups such as women, African Americans, LGBT group etc. Many Americans also voluntarily stood up against the ongoing war with Vietnam. During the 1970s, many groups of Americans continued to fight for expanded social and political rights. In 1972, after years of campaigning by feminists, Congress approved the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution, giving them a new space in the society. During the phase that is being talked about, many corporate offices were burnt down, supermarkets, households, police stations, etc were also striked by the bombings. These leading players involved in the bombinbgs called themselves as a separate group called New World Liberation Front. A lot of bloodshed was witnessed and the name of peace and love had a long way to be brought back into the state and the surroundings.
