Ans) Following are the components of sustainable design and construction :
1) Materials - Materials for sustainable building are obtained from natural , renewable sources that are harvested in sustainable way to reduce embodied energy and cost of transportation.Materials are choosen in terms of their embodied energy ,durability , recycled content and their ability to be reused
2) Energy systems - Methods such as passive solar design will reduce the heating and cooling cost of building. Sustainsble construction uses energy efficient lighting , low energy appliances and renewable energy sources such as solar panels, wind turbines etc
3 Water management - Minimizing the water use is achieved with rainwater harvesting systems and recycle systems which will recycle waste water .Nowa days, groundwater recharge process is also used to harvest rainwater
4) Health components - Use of non toxic products which will improve air quality and reduce the rate of allergies. These materials are emission free and have low or no VOC (Volatile organic carbon) Content .Also, these materials are moisture resistant which will prevent growth of microbes
5) Rating system such as LEED and GRIHA criteria - These rating systems provides framework for healthy, highly efficient and cost effective sustainable buildings . The certification of these rating system will also encourage others to use sustainable and eco friendly construction methods
