  • In 1930, the average male infant lived to be 58 and female infants lived to be 62. The average male born in the early 21st century is expected to live 75 years and the average female 80. Since the highest death rates in humans are found in the early years of life, the average male who lives to be 65 is expected to live to be 82, but once he reaches 85 he is likely to live to be 91. The average 65-year-old woman lives to the age of 85 and the average 85-year-old woman can expect to live past 92 years.
  • For most of human history, the average lifespan was considerably less than 50 years. It began to rise markedly in the 19th century, hitting 49 in the United States in 1900, and then took off in the 20th century.
  • U.S. life expectancy has been rising at a slower pace than other high-income countries over the last 25 years, particularly for women.
  • Evidence suggests that smoking is the main culprit in the slower growth of U.S. life expectancy. Five decades ago, more Americans smoked, and those who smoked did so more intensively, compared to their counterparts in Europe and Japan.
  • Obesity is associated with a lack of physical exercise.Evidence indicates that U.S. adults are somewhat more sedentary than their European counterparts. Levels of physical activity among older adults also likely played some role in U.S. life expectancy trends.
  • Life expectancy in the United States has dropped which marked the first downturn in more than two decades. On average, Americans can now expect to live 78.6 years, a statistically significant drop of 0.1 year, according to a report on 2016 data published by the National Center for Health Statistics. Women can now expect to live a full five years longer than men: 81.1 years vs. 76.1 years.

In the early 20th century, the French Canadian microbiologist Félix d’Hérelle used a virus called a bacteriophage (“phage”) to successfully treat some diseases caused by bacteria, such as dysentery and cholera. Subsequent experiments with “phage therapy” yielded mixed results; however, and enthusiasm quickly waned—especially once antibiotics became available in the 1940s. The therapy is not currently approved in the United States. Phage therapy involves obtaining a pure culture of a disease-causing bacterium and exposing samples of the culture to different...

Early 20th-century physicist Niels Bohr modeled the hydrogen atom as an electron orbiting a proton in one or another well-defined circular orbit. When the electron followed its smallest possible orbit, the atom was said to be in its ground state. (a) When the hydrogen atom is in its ground state, what orbital speed (in m/s) does the Bohr model predict for the electron? m/s (b) When the hydrogen atom is in its ground state, what kinetic energy (in eV) does...
