Expert Solution

Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive changes suggests that individuals go through 4 stages of cognitive development, one of which is 'formal operational stage' which is also at times referred to as adolescence. It is the fourth and the last stage of cognitive development according to the theory given by Piaget. At this point, according to Piaget, kids get advanced in the ways that they perceive the world. Their solutions to problems and the new ideas they can come up with start becoming more and more complex and sophisticated. They can think about abstract and theoretical concepts and also come up with logical conclusions to many of the problems they are presented with.

Despite being well known among the academic circles, Jean Piaget's theory has been on the receiving end of several criticisms. It is suggested and was also believed by Piaget that cognitive development does not always follow the hard and fast stages of development. There can be several variations as we go from one subject to another as development does not always follow a smooth and predictable path. Even when the path is predictable, at times it becomes tougher to predict the locus of the cognitive development. While Piaget's focus and contribution to the qualitative development and its impact on education cannot be ignored. It is also true that the major source of Piaget's research were his own three children. As a consequence, all the three children came from the same socio-economic background which makes the sample set extremely small and the data very biased.

Therefore it becomes difficult to generalize his findings to a larger population group. This is also because Piaget never gave accurate documentation of the research methods that he followed while conducting the research. Also, the manner in which the participants were selected is also not clear in the academic circles.
